Photos from Handcart Trek 2013
Farmington West Stake
June 24-26, 2013

My wife Julie and I were assistant trail bosses on this trek, which took place at the Mosida Handcart Site in Utah County, Utah. It gave the youth in our church a chance to connect with the pioneers who pulled up their roots to cross the plains, many of them pulling and pushing handcarts more than 1,300 miles, to join Zion in the 1840s and 1850s. Many of this year's participants and their leaders, including Julie and I, are direct descendants of such pioneers. Two of the handcart companies, the Martin and Willey parties, started too late in the year and encountered a brutal early winter. About one in five of those parties lost their lives and were buried or covered with rocks and brush in Wyoming and northern Utah. I took part in a trek in 2003 at Martin's Cove in eastern Wyoming, a site where many of the Martin Company met their maker and where they were met by rescuers who traveled by horseback.
